As a car owner, you understand that regular maintenance and repairs are essential to keeping your vehicle running smoothly. However, these expenses can quickly add up, leaving you feeling overwhelmed and unsure of what to do. That’s where vehicle service contracts come in. We’ll cover how to choose the right contract for your vehicle and what to look for when selecting a provider. So, if you’re considering a vehicle service contract or simply want to learn more about this valuable investment, read on.
A vehicle service contract (or also known as extended warranty) is a legal agreement between a vehicle owner and a service provider, typically a dealership or third-party company. This contract covers the cost of certain repairs and maintenance on the vehicle beyond the manufacturer’s warranty period. Vehicle service contracts can cover a variety of components, such as the engine, transmission, electrical system, and more.
Vehicle service contracts work similarly to insurance policies. The vehicle owner pays a premium for coverage, and the service provider agrees to cover the cost of certain repairs and maintenance. The contract will outline the specific components that are covered, as well as any limitations or exclusions.
When a covered component needs repair or maintenance, the vehicle owner contacts the service provider to file a claim. The service provider may require the vehicle to be brought to a specific dealership or repair shop for service. Once the repair is complete, the service provider will pay the repair shop directly for the covered cost of the repair.

After the New Vehicle Limited Warranty expires, the Powertrain Limited Warranty will protect only the powertrain components of your vehicle, not necessarily parts like cooling system components, steering components, electrical or suspension components. A vehicle service contract offers more comprehensive coverage and can decrease your financial exposure to these repair costs.
My manufacturer’s New Vehicle Limited Warranty already covers my vehicle. Why should I purchase a vehicle service contract? If you plan to keep your vehicle beyond the term of the New Vehicle Limited Warranty, a vehicle service contract could help you avoid unexpected and potentially costly repair bills in the event of a breakdown.
Yes, we’ve teamed up with a company called Service Payment Plan to offer that to you. Ask a participating dealer about their interest-free 12- 18- or 24-month payment plans.
The term begins at the time you purchase the contract and at the current odometer reading at the time of purchase. For example, a 24,000-mile/24-month contract purchased for a vehicle with 40,000 miles will end when the odometer reaches 64,000 miles or 2 years after the contract began, whichever comes first. If you purchase the Powertrain Wrap or Certified Pre-owned (In-Service Date) coverage, the term begins at the vehicle’s original in-service date and 0 miles. It ends when you reach your term or mileage limit, whichever comes first.
